Introduction to Sourdough Starter
Welcome to Lili's Kitchen! Today, we are going to dive into the world of sourdough starters. Sourdough starter is a simple mixture of flour and water that captures wild yeast and bacteria present in the environment. This magical mixture is the heart of sourdough bread baking, adding flavor, texture, and rise to your loaves.
Recipe for Sourdough Starter
Ingredients:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup lukewarm water
Instructions:
In a clean glass or plastic container, mix the flour and water until well combined. The mixture should be thick and paste-like.
Cover the container loosely with a clean cloth or plastic wrap, ensuring it can still breathe. Let it sit at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
Every 24 hours, discard half of the starter and feed it with equal parts of flour and water. Stir well after each feeding.
Repeat this process daily for about 5-7 days, or until your starter is bubbly, has a slightly tangy smell, and doubles in size within a few hours of feeding.
Your sourdough starter is now ready to use in your favorite sourdough bread recipe!
